28 ǀXam people, inmates at the Breakwater convict station were interviewed by the linguist Wilhelm Lloyd and his sister-in-law, Lucy Lloyd. In 1863, Resident Magistrate Louis Anthing introduced the first ǀXam-speakers to Bleek. Bleek and Lloyd recorded as much anthropological and ethnographic information as possible. This included genealogies, places of origin, stories, the customs and daily life of the IXam informants. Here I note the contribution of IXam to our history.

“you come, guest in this place

feast on your greed

you cage me, milk me

I am your book

You read yet learn nothing”
