These days Keerom Street is the legal precinct and houses the Western Cape High Court. Traces of its colourful past are submerged within the city landscape. Sex workers gathered here to dance to the Malay bands and sell their wares in the night hours. Among these, were slave and European women, who were shipped in on the Gentoo and had lost their good-standing in the colony due to the goings-on on the ship’s journey in. To this day in Cape Town, the word gentoo is used to describe someone who has loose morals.

“the halls of justice pander

tilting scales to the ways of old

weighing & measuring with lewd consideration

for those who have stolen much more than their weight in gold”
