Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum

Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum

One of the first township-based museums in the Western Cape, this museum focuses on the migrant labour system. The museum includes Hostel 33, the only remaining hostel used during the migrant labour system designed for single men.

Among the exhibitions, Workplace Stories highlights how workers are robbed of family and leisure time. This exhibition is one of the many ways in which the museum tells and educates the public about workplace stories from different communities. These stories were collected from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Siyanyanzela, is an exhibition about forced removals and the struggle to make a home in post-apartheid South Africa. It documents the forced removal of residents of Siyanyanzela in June 2014.

The museum is known for its direct engagement through its youth development and empowerment programmes.
