Sir George Grey

In the Company Gardens you will find the commemorative statue of Sir George Grey who was instrumental in legalising the ownership of land appropriated by the settlers. In 1850, Sir George Grey confiscated land from African (Nguni & Khoesan) people leaving them to search for work on farms. Much is written about Grey’s benevolence. The 1856 Xhosa National Suicide, however indicates a level of desperation belying this benevolence. The 1913 Native Land Act profoundly changed the socio-political and economic landscape of South Africa.
