The Cape Medical Museum


The Cape Medical Museum was established as a provincial museum in 1986. Its history is closely linked to the New Somerset Hospital and the City Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Green Point Cape Town. The museum is housed in the residence of the Medical Superintendent of the City Hospital, built in 1904. 

Currently, the museum is closed for renovations that include new exhibitions focusing on Cape Town through the lens of medical history as well as developments within the medical field. Future exhibitions will include:

  • History of biomedical medicine at the Cape

  • Indigenous medicine

  • History of nursing at the Cape

  • Diseases and pandemics at the Cape

  • Interesting medical personalities at the Cape.
